Specific to the Position
Position will report to the Administrator within the Office of Natural Lands Management (ONLM), or other full-time ONLM employees and be trained in performing the following: botanical field surveys of rare and endangered plant species regulated by the DEP; biotic and environmental impact assessments; habitat suitability assessments; review of plans and environmental documents; report preparation; maintenance of essential records; attendance at internal and external meetings.

The Professional Development Award is made possible by the New Jersey Chapter of The Wildlife Society. The award’s purpose is to assist wildlife or fisheries professionals in New Jersey by offsetting costs of professional development courses, training events, certifications, or research projects.

Application deadlines: March 1 and September 1 (accepted on a rolling basis)

Award: up to $500 per award

Who can apply: Professionals in wildlife/fisheries fields who either reside in and/or work in New Jersey.

The Russell A. Cookingham Scholarship is made possible by an endowment from Russell A. Cookingham, former Director of the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. The scholarship’s purpose is to assist qualified undergraduate or graduate students in the wildlife, fisheries, ecology, or natural resources majors with college expenses.

Application deadline: December 1, annually

Award: $1,000

Who can apply: Undergraduate AND graduate students in wildlife, fisheries, ecology, or natural resources majors. Undergraduate students must have completed at least half of the degree requirements for their major and have at least 15 credits in biological sciences to be eligible. Applicants must be New Jersey residents. Students attending school outside New Jersey are eligible.

The James E. Applegate Scholarship is made possible by an endowment from Jim and Carol Applegate. Jim (Doc) Applegate was an esteemed Professor of Wildlife Ecology at Rutgers University for over 30 years and the founder of the New Jersey Chapter of The Wildlife Society and the Rutgers University Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society. This award is intended to assist New Jersey resident undergraduate or graduate students or students majoring in wildlife/ecology/natural resources with travel expenses for professional society meetings.

Application deadline: February 1 and August 1

Award: $500 (granted twice per year)

Who can apply: Undergraduate or graduate students who are New Jersey residents or students majoring in wildlife/ecology/natural resources.
